Higgledy-Piggledy
Higgledy-piggledy
Zhanna P. Rader—
In Russia she wed an
American man,
Came to the U.S. and,
Poetry-writing-wise,
Felt that she wondrously
Was born again.
Despite The Flaws
He voiced not once “My
fault”
Or granted “I’m to blame,”
My steadfast spouse of years.
I prize him all the same.
Nor did he ever try
Or have in mind to tame
His sovereign, bachelor ways.
My honey, all the same.
But then, when I’m in not
So laudable a frame
Of mood, his posture says:
I love you all the same.
Mary Jane And A
Dragonfly
Anthony, my six-year-old,
Brought from school the latest joke,
Quite a hit as he was told.
It’s about that Mary Jane,
An observant, feisty girl
With a somewhat curious brain.
She, when walking for a while,
Saw a little dragonfly
Perched on massive messy pile.
Chuckling, Mary Jane just spat,
For she knew the dragonfly
Never could have made all that.
How we laughed – my son and I,
At that boastful dragonfly!
Pizza
Pizza is my favorite food,
It puts me in a spicy mood.
Although when I’m spicy,
I’m not so very nicie.
The other day I kicked a cat
I stumbled over, dropping flat.
If first I’d eaten, say, some bread,
I might have stroked the cat instead,
Then called for pizza on the phone
And gorged it down at home alone—
Seeing no cat or other beast
Got close to my delicious feast.
But here’s the truth; it’s plain enough:
I hate to eat flat-tasting stuff!
While bread may please the multitude,
King pizza still’s my favorite food.
Sketching
With Circles
They say you can draw
things
And creatures with circles—
The clouds and the mountains,
The fish and the turtles.
You need seven circles
To sketch just one pickle,
You need just one circle
To master a nickel.
Excited, I chalked out
Two waffles, a buckle,
My hat, my bifocals
And even a truckle;
A rocket, a cricket,
A grape and a grackle…
Which prompted my household
To chuckle and cackle:
Where fancy of mine daubed
Those fishes and turtles,
They found only circles
And circles, and circles...
