Rengay
Almost There*
the play of
light
on stone and water...
a slow paddle |
/kk |
our red canoe
almost there—
wind-blown reeds cast shadows |
/ha |
drifting in
the bay—
the bright sheen of her
open white sails |
/vs |
another
blue-black
mussel from the shallows—
a clang in the pail |
/ha |
waves rapidly
rolling in—
sea foam forms, glistens |
/vs |
deepening sky—
oars draw lines in the sand
on the way home |
/ha |
*Note on the first
stanza: this rengay is a response to an earlier challenge to
write a rengay starting with a stanza by Chiyo-ni. How rare I
thought, as I read those rengay, if the "hokku" had been by a
living, contemporary poet? I chose a haiku by Kirsty Karkow,
whom I consider a "contemporary classic". - ha
