The Sejong Cultural Society

2010 sejong writing competition: Sijo Division

 

1. Eligibility: all pre-college students residing in the US regardless of ethnic background.
2. Sijo must be written in English on a topic of your choice. One entry per student is permitted.
3. Division: One division open to students in grade 12 or younger
4. Prizes: First ($300), Second ($200), Third ($100), Friends of Pacific Rim Award: ($50 each)
The winners¡¯ works may be published in the Korea Times Chicago and the Korean Quarterly (St. Paul, MN) and ¡°Azelea: A Journal of Korean Literature and Culture¡± published by the Korea Institute at Harvard University.
6. Please visit our website for rules: The entry and application must be sent as email attachments to writing@SejongCultu ralSociety. org. Please download application form from our website. The contestant's name cannot be written in the document (i.e. it must be written anonymously) .
7. Submission deadline: April 30th, 2010. Entries must arrive on or before midnight (CST) by e-mail. Any questions should be emailed to writing@SejongCulturalSociety. org
8. Our Mission: The goals of the Sejong Writing Competition are to discover children and young adults talented in writing and to encourage them to learn and write about Korea and its culture. Through this writing competition we hope to increase the awareness and understanding of Korea's cultural heritage amongst the younger generations growing up in the United States so as to bridge Korean and Western cultures and promote harmony among people of various ethnic backgrounds.

Divisions: One division open to all pre-college students.

Prizes (funded by the Korea Institute at Harvard University):

•First ($300), Second ($200), Third ($100)
•Honorable mention - friends of Pacific Rim Awards ($50 each)
•Competition winners will be announced in AZALEA: Journal of Korean Literature and Culture.
•Winners' works may be published in the Korea Times Chicago.

Guidelines:

•Write one sijo in English on a topic of your choice. A title for the sijo is not required.
More information on writing sijo can be found here.
•The contestant’s name cannot be written in the document.
•The entry should be typed as a Word document (.doc, .docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf).
Sijo should be written in 12pt Times New Roman font with 1.5 inch margins on all sides.
•One entry per student is permitted. (Students are permitted one essay and one sijo entry.)
•Entries and applications must be sent as email attachments to writing@sejongculturalsociety.org. The subject of the email should be “Sejong Writing Competition Entry.” Entries and applications must be sent together or they will not be accepted.
•No application fee.


•We reserve the right to use all submitted pieces in future publications of the Sejong Cultural Society with no compensation to the authors.
•We reserve the right to not award any prizes.
